RSS A to V: Using RSS feeds with Aleph and Voyager
by Edward M. Corrado, Head of Library Technology, Binghamton University; State University of New York

This presentation will describe what RSS feeds are and how various libraries are taking advantage of this technology with their Integrated Library System (ILS) to deliver constantly updated information to patrons. Uses include feeds new book and other acquisitions listings, feeds created for university portals, subject guides, and course pages within Learning Management Systems (LMS) such as Moodle, Blackboard, or Sakai. While this presentation will describe various ways to create RSS feeds from Aleph and Voyager, it’s primary focus will be on the different ways that RSS feeds can be used to help improve service to your patrons in the Web 2,0 environment. This presentation should be useful for the beginner and expert alike no matter which ILS is used.

Rescuing a Sinking Ship: Replacing Voyager Union Catalog with Aleph Central Catalog – a pilot project
by Esa Kurki, Systems Analyst, Linnea2 Consortium of Finland

The Linnea2 Consortium of Finland will be modernizing its Union Catalog LINDA by the end of year 2008. The topics of the presentation are: Why the need? Why was Aleph Central Catalog chosen for the pilot project? Steps of the pilot project. Outcome of the project. Plans for the future – near and beyond. The audience could learn how two different Ex Libris’s library systems can work together in harmony in a consortium environment: Aleph as Union Catalog and Voyager as ILS of the participating libraries.

E-Books and DigiTool: A Roundtable Discussion
by Pascal Calarco, Head, Library Systems, University of Notre Dame/Michiana Academic Library Consortium, Notre Dame, USA and Joseph M. Shubitowski, Head, Information Systems, Getty Getty Research Institute, Los Angeles, CA USA

The recent E-Book Focus Group report that Ex Libris worked with some customer sites on provides nice detail in the range of technical and policy needs that modern research libraries need as infrastructure to manage current and future e-book collections. Can some of these needs can be accomplished in the short-term by utilizing existing Ex Libris applications. We would like to explore these, specifically with DigiTool, Aleph and Primo. Dr. Paul Ayris, Chair of the E-Book Focus Group, will provide some further detail on how the Focus Group viewed ‘productizing’ the needs. Joseph Shubitowski will discuss the Getty Research Institute’s use of DigiTool for collections digitized and contributed to the Open Content Alliance project, with DigiTool serving as a repository, and Pascal Calarco will discuss including both commercial and public domain materials in their DigiTool repository at the University of Notre Dame.
Other perspectives are most welcome, and we would like to see an interactive, lively discussion at this session.
