Ex Libris Customer Stories (APAC)
Juan Du, Southern University of Science and Technology
Katsunori Iino, Bukkyo University
(1) Southern University of Science and Technology Library has been implementing new services for its users by integrating Alma and Primo with other systems and platforms. In her presentation, Du Juan will share their experience in using Alma APIs for implementing these services. Hopefully the audience can find it useful and get some idea how Alma can be utilized for providing other value-added services to their own library users.
(2) In this presentation, Mr. Iino shares his experience of localizing Alma to Bukkyo University Library by showing the examples of local meta data schemas and technical challenges. He is proposing that it is necessary to have a special mechanism to reflect local specific needs in Alma, in order for Alma to be widely used in non-English speaking countries.

Challenges of the Covid-19 Pandemic for User Services in the Libraries of thePontificia Universidad Católica de Chile
Margarita Silva, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile
Pablo Vásquez, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile
Alejandra Ross, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile
The health situation, due to the pandemic in Chile, caused the closure of educational institutions based on the prevention measures established by the government, which required that in the case of the Pontificia Universidad Católica libraries, they close as cases increased on campuses, which happened suddenly. This required the rapid adaptation of UC Libraries services, always focusing on prioritizing democratization in access to information and technological resources for online classes for students with economic difficulties, prioritizing the loan of laptops for them. In preparation for opening, this included the development of protocols for face-to-face services, such as reservation of individual seats, group study tables with physical separation protection according to capacity, return of loan material and, quarantines in spaces prepared for this and availability of them after the quarantine period.

Secure Self-checkout Kiosks using Alma API with Two-Factor Authentication
Ron Bulaon, Li Ka Shing Library – Singapore Management University
Self-checkout kiosks have become a staple feature of many modern and digitized libraries. These devices are used by library patrons for self-service item loans. Most implementations are not new, in fact many of these systems are simple, straight forward and work as intended. But behind this useful technology, there is a security concern on authentication that has to be addressed.
In my proposed presentation, I will discuss the risk factors of self-checkout kiosks and propose a solution using Alma APIs. I will address the technical shortcomings of the current implementations, compared to the proposed solution, and where the weakest link lies. The discussion will also include a demonstration of a working Proof-of-Concept (POC) in Python to show how Two-Factor authentication is the simplest, yet best-suited approach for the current scenario and why other seemingly possible solutions are not fit for the current situation.

Primo VE across Wales: WHELF’s experiences
Toby Hooper, Cardiff Metropolitan University
Helen Griffiths, Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama
Andrew Brown, Swansea University
Bronwen Blatchford, Cardiff University
Jenny McNally, WHELF
The WHELF consortium have been working on moving to Primo VE during Summer 2021. WHELF uses a Discovery Network rather than a Network Zone so we share some features and collaborated on the migration. However, each library has taken its own approach to the project and come across different challenges. The session will include: moving from Total Care at RWCMD; user testing at Swansea and Cardiff Metropolitan Universities; and managing multiple institution and campus set up at Cardiff University.
Replacing Ustat with CELUS for Data-driven Acquisition
Jiri Pavlik, National Library of Technology
CELUS is a usage statistics tool developed in cooperation with the Czech National Centre for Electronic Information Resources (CzechELib). CELUS or CC-PLUS are both available replacements for SFX add-on Ustat which can’t support COUNTER 5. CELUS can provide fast and powerful data analytics, custom reports, overlap analysis, usage shares, and some other useful functionalities. It supports COUNTER 4 & 5 and can also handle custom non-COUNTER data. It is available for libraries worldwide as an open-source, on-premise installation or as a hosted service in the cloud. This presentation will demonstrate how data-driven acquisition is performed in the National Library of Technology and Tomas Bata University in Zlin by using CELUS.

User Data- How do you Protect yours?
Rachel Salby, La Trobe University
Christina Hennessey, California State University, Northridge University Library
This interactive audience session will discuss best practices for protecting user privacy in Alma and Primo, while still allowing libraries to access important information about usage and cohort patterns.
Transgender and gender diverse people are particularly impacted by poor user personal data management. Marginalised people have a heightened need for protection of their borrowing history. Vulnerable users are at risk from unsecured access to their contact information.
Our facilitators will guide a session to find out what Ex Libris are libraries are doing to protect user data, covering questions such as:
- What user information do you ingest, and why?
- Do your users know what information you collect?
- What are you doing to keep users safe from misgendering, deadnaming, and exposure of personal contact information?
- How do you protect user personal information in Alma? Who is allowed to access what, and what measures do you have in place to make sure this data isn’t breached?
- How do you balance competing user preferences for access to borrowing and request history?

Sketching a Data Warehouse in Alma Data Visualization Tool
Francisco Peralta, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile
Maribel Alvarado,Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile
On the road to building a UC Libraries Data Warehouse based primarily on data stored in Ex Libris products plus other systems and activities that generate data, Alma Data Visualization can be a very useful tool, especially for integration testing of Alma and Primo with external data sources, such as Springshare’s LibApps and EZProxy, among others.
Collaboration in Service of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in the Orbis Cascade Alliance
Crystal Rodgers, University of Washington Libraries
Erin Grant, University of Washington
Gayle, O’Hara, Washington State University
Stewart Baker, Western Oregon University
Ryan Hildebrand, University of Oregon
Lauren Goss, University of Oregon Libraries
The Orbis Cascade Alliance is a 37-institution academic library consortium in the Pacific Northwest, with institutions in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. The Alliance is structured around ‘teams’ that manage specific functional areas such as unique materials, systems, and discovery. Each of these teams is split into groups that manage specific projects. This presentation will describe how groups in three teams collaborated to create and implement user-findable guidelines for description and cataloguing with regard to equity and bias in archival collections, rare books, digital objects and other unique materials. We will discuss the process of cross-group consulting and collaboration that went into creating the guidelines, describe the guidelines, and share how we implemented them in systems including ArchivesSpace and Primo. Future directions will also be discussed.

Duck, Duck, Goose? Algorithmic Bias in Ex Libris Discovery Systems
Franny Gaede, University of Oregon
Marilee Zafaripour, University of Oregon
Margaret Alexander, University of Oregon
In 2015, Ex Libris and other companies declared Open Discovery Initiative compliance. Not a lot has been published since on the topic. This session will explore the methods of a student-faculty research collaboration investigating how algorithmic bias may yet manifest in both autocomplete and search results in Ex Libris discovery interfaces. The researchers will facilitate a discussion about the research, and what change and advocacy in this area might look like.
