Day 3 – Lecture Hall – AV 01.12

Making use of article-level data and AI to improve linking

Presenter

  • Kendall Bartsch, Third Iron

Connecting users to full-text articles used to be a straightforward process of creating an OpenURL query that linked users from A&I resources to publisher sites. Today, it’s not so simple. Several factors now need to be considered in creating a full-text link and deciding which one is used, including which publisher and aggregator sources have the article, the formats available to the user (PDF or HTML), whether the article is Open Access, if the version of record and alternative versions are available, if an article has been retracted or carries an expression of concern, and if the article is from a predatory journal. This presentation describes how the LibKey linking technology uses article-level intelligence and AI-based source selection to navigate the new terrain of linking to provide the fastest, most reliable, and most informed link to full text, every time, wherever the user starts their research journey.

Showcasing architecture design theses with Alma patron deposits

Presenters

  • Peta Hopkins, Bond University
  • Bronwyn Linthwaite, Bond University

This presentation demonstrates Alma patron deposits for displaying student work. It is a case study of the Master of Architecture Design Theses Collection at Bond University. The collection has launched with the first two exemplars selected by the Abedian School of Architecture.

The Abedian School of Architecture, opened in February 2014 as the only studio-based architecture school in Australia. This studio-based curriculum has informed a unique approach to post-graduate assessment, a design-based thesis in art book format.

The presentation will discuss the partnership between the faculty and the library, the benefits and challenges of using patron deposits, such as increasing the visibility and impact of student work, facilitating access, and managing workflows and metadata.

The presentation will also share some best practices and lessons learned from this project, and provide some suggestions for future developments and collaborations.

LOD-enabled library systems for the future: A librarian’s perspective

Presenters

  • Hans Schürmann, SLSP (Swiss Library Service Platform)

Linked open data is not a new topic and there are already many projects and just as many presentations about what you can do with LOD. However, LOD has not yet really arrived in library software. This presentation will attempt to set requirements for library systems so that LOD can be implemented and used effectively and widely by the library community. More than that, the presenters will discuss the ways in which libraries can help system vendors to develop LOD-enabled systems for the future by drawing the experience they have gained in dealing with research information systems, repositories, and open access publications.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) – the Library Discovery context

Presenter

  • Christine Stohn Ex Libris / Clarivate

AI and machine learning are not new, but the rapid uptake of ChatGPT and the OpenAI platform highlight the need to explore how we can benefit from such applications, and if there are any downsides. In this session I will introduce a prototype project at Clarivate to bring generative AI into discovering content. The prototype brings together the convenience of natural language search and conversational answers with the reliability of academic sources. I will discuss the goals, the details of the project, the experiences so far, and the status.
