Don’t miss the Leganto sessions at IGeLU 2018!
IGeLU 2018 programme includes a Leganto panel and presentations from customers highlighting their experiences using leganto:
Leganto Panel: Stories from the Front Line
In this session representatives from Harvard University, Memorial University and BIBSYS will share their Front Line experiences using Leganto and working with students and instructors in the management of the reading lists.
Developing a multi-team workflow to deliver a scalable Resource List service
The University of Edinburgh launched Leganto in June 2017, going live immediately with a multi-team workflow that enables us to manage the provision of course materials, including acquisitions, digitisation requests and moves to reserve collections via the Resource Lists service. One of the main drivers to move from the previous system was the opportunities presented by Alma and Leganto to streamline library workflows and create the necessary efficiencies to allow us to grow and support the Resource Lists service at scale. This presentation will outline the approach taken, roles and responsibilities of teams using Alma and/or Leganto, challenges encountered and the inevitable workarounds. The presentation will look back at the benefits and successes of using the workflow in the first full academic year and touch on elements to be reviewed and improved for next academic year.
Raising the profile of a Resource Lists Service to engage with stakeholders
In common with many institutions, the University of Edinburgh doesn’t have an institutional mandate to ensure academic staff use Resource Lists (Leganto) for their courses. Engaging with senior management, academics and students and encouraging them to buy-in to new (or alternative) ways of doing things requires many approaches and perseverance to capture and maintain interest. From social media and surveys to cakes and a Resource Lists Week, this presentation will outline some of the advocacy and promotional activities that have helped raise the profile of the Resource Lists service at Edinburgh to key stakeholders. The presentation will also outline recent initiatives to use Resource Lists to support other strategic projects, such as encouraging use of special collections in teaching and how Resource Lists can be used to support student projects and raise the profile of the service to wider audiences.
Leganto at Macquarie University: impressions, adjustments, improvements
Leganto has been piloted in evolving stages at Macquarie University since mid-2017. This presentation will discuss the stages of our pilot project, the milestones reached and the lessons learnt. I will reflect on three main topics: impressions, adjustments and improvements. Impressions will cover the feedback gathered from unit convenors, students, and library staff. Adjustments will address the new workflows for library staff — including the storage of digital copyright materials in Alma and the ongoing monitoring of reading lists — as well as changes to the support model provided to unit convenors. Changes in student access to reading list materials will also be discussed. When discussing improvements, I will focus on the engagement with reading list creation and use. To finish, I will outline the next steps and future goals of our pilot project and the challenges we expect to face.
There will also be a Leganto Working Group Business Meeting. If you’re curious to see what the Leganto Working Group is about, you are welcome to join us! The group’s members will be represented, so this is a chance to see who we are, and talk to us. This meeting is open to all.
Leganto at University of Edinburgh
Angela Laurins, Library Learning Services Manager, University of Edinburgh
The University of Edinburgh has been live with Leganto for just over a year. In this short time we’ve integrated our library workflows to provide a streamlined service for instructors, created efficiencies across teams and successfully completed our first rollover. We’ve also been exploring how we can use Leganto to promote use of special collections in teaching. We’ve really enjoyed the opportunity to welcome several visitors from across the UK, Norway, and as far afield as Australia, to share our experience. Many of our discussions focused on Alma/Leganto workflows and academic engagement. It is reassuring to know we all face similar challenges in our respective institutions and can work together to find innovative and creative solutions. Angela Laurins and Sarah Ames from the University of Edinburgh will be presenting at IGeLU
Leganto at Lancaster University
One-year on from the implementation of Leganto, Lancaster University are celebrating the end of a successful academic cycle in which we migrated, relatively seamlessly, from a well-established legacy system to this new offering. Crucial to our success was the ability to develop a custom integration for our VLE, Moodle, to allow individual citations and public notes to be embedded within module spaces. Our in-house developers were able to accomplish this and subsequently, they have made the code freely available in the community.
Our focus for the forthcoming year is to further integrate workflows into the system, to realise additional efficiencies, whilst simultaneously extending academic reach and engagement through increased advocacy and liaison. Exemplary practice within one academic department, whereby collaborative list development has taken place between an academic, a student and the library, is being showcased both internally and at external events to demonstrate our belief that Leganto is a means to provide an improved bridge between pedagogy and resource provision. Lesley English (Librarian), together with Magnus George (academic) and Megan Breakwell (student) are to present a paper on the innovative approach they have taken at The Northern Collaboration conference in September. Lesley also intends to deliver this as a ‘Let’s Talk Leganto’ session in the Autumn too.
As an early adopter of Leganto, Lancaster University has hosted a number of visits from UK HEI ALMA libraries who are in the initial stages of exploring alternate reading list systems. Colleagues have also presented at regional events to share experiences of migrating to a new reading list system.
